CHAPTER 16

“I love cherry tarts,” Cody said.

“You love all tarts,” Cora said.

“True, but cherry is my favorite.”

“Yesterday, it was apple.”

“I’m not allowed to change my mind?”

Cora looked across the bakery counter. Cody was, indeed, enjoying his tart. That was when Cora laid out the page she had torn out of the pawn shop notebook.

“What’s this?” Cody asked. “And, don’t tell me how you got it.”

“It’s a page from Neil’s notebook. You’ll notice that the description fits the Dormy Diamond. You’ll also notice that it’s circled in red, which makes it special somehow.”

“But it’s old, from the date on the page. Long before the murder.”

“Exactly. Which raises a question. Why would Neil be messing around with the Dormy, when Edith was wearing it?”

Cody frowned. “I’m not the sleuth you are. What do you think?”

“I think Vivian had the Dormy appraised, with the idea she would inherit it,” Nana said. “People are always trying to figure out what they’re going to get when someone dies.”

Cora glanced over to where Nana was arranging a row of bread loaves.

“That makes sense,” Cora said. “It also indicates that Vivian was planning on inheriting.”

“That’s motive,” Cody said and licked his fingers. “Premeditated means murder one.”

Cora tapped the circled item. “Do you really think Vivian planned the murder? She always seemed so devoted to her mother.”

“Mark my words,” Nana said, “no viper’s sting can match that of a wicked child.”

“I’ll remember that,” Cora said, with a smile.

“A grandchild is different,” Nana replied.

“Well,” Cody said, “I believe we need to have a chat with Vivian. You available, Cora?”

“Of course, she is,” Nana said. “I’m not an invalid.”

“Don’t, Nana,” Cora said. “I can make my own decisions. But, I think talking to Vivian is exactly what we should be doing.”

Cody’s eyes sparkled, and Cora knew she had said the right thing.
